Description

You are invited to join our virtual 2022 Purim Celebration on zoom.

Purim is the celebration of the story of Queen Esther of Persia, a brave, intelligent, beautiful Jewish woman who changed the course of Jewish history. The story is told in the Book of Esther in the Bible and earliest observances of Purim are believed to date back over 2000 years ago.

At JFS, Purim is a boisterous holiday celebrated by attending our JFS Purim ‘Schpiel,’ which recounts how the Jewish people were saved from persecution in the ancient Persian empire. Since Purim is based on themes including disguise, farce, melodrama, comedy and victory over existential threat, it lends itself to public displays of rejoicing, irreverence and masquerade. Wild props, noisemakers and costume enhancements are strongly encouraged.

So actually, what is a Purim ‘Schpiel’ besides a Yiddish word for skit or play?

It is a dramatic presentation of the events outlined in the Book of Esther that provides an opportunity for crowds to cheer the heroes and boo the evil villain.

And with all its madness and merriment, silliness and laughter, Purim is also an opportunity to be inspired and to make a commitment to be better informed about identifying senseless hate and ways in which we can address it.

Zoom link will be provided on March 16, 2022 at 3:00 p.m.
