Community Need
The Hand Up Food Pantry believes in helping clients reach self-sufficiency by providing a ‘hand up’, not just a handout. This is accomplished by connecting clients to community resources in addition to providing emergency food relief at distribution sites throughout San Diego County. The Chabad Downtown Food Distribution serves a multitude of clients from various backgrounds and life circumstances. Many of these clients speak another language other than English, and it can be difficult for JFS staff and other volunteers to communicate effectively with the clients.
Goal of Position:
We have more clients coming to the food distribution who speak Mandarin, and we'd be grateful for the help of a Translation Volunteer to assist with interpreting. We also welcome support with the food distribution.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with translation and client check-in, provide directions and instructions to clients, and answer client questions.
- Set up the shopping area outdoors in parking lot.
- We operate rain or shine, so please bring an umbrella if it's raining.
- Distribute food to clients.
- Help repack the truck and clean up the shopping area at the end of the shift.

- Volunteer Waiver
