Legacy Book
The Serving Our Survivors program in Orange County is looking for volunteers to assist our clients with recording any part of their life story they wish to share in a book form. Access to technology including laptops and scanners will be provided for survivors who need it. The volunteers will assist with familiarizing the survivors with the technology and assist them with documenting memories, scanning photographs and formatting for web-based publishing program. Goal of Position:
Volunteers will increase the clients understanding and ability to use technology while increasing their socialization and feeling of accomplishment processing their memories & getting their stories documented to share with whom they choose. This project is focused on whatever part of the survivor’s life they are comfortable reviewing and want to share, not specifically WW2 experiences.
Responsibilities:
- Meet with Holocaust survivors in their home or predetermined meeting place.
- Help with recording of event/story, prompting and encouraging memories when appropriate.
- Assist with scanning relevant photographs and documenting where, when, who & context of photographs.
- Help format story and photographs for publishing platform.
Qualifications and Accommodations:
- Volunteers must pass a Livescan background check and DMV check
- Volunteers must complete HIPAA training
- Volunteers under 18 need to be accompanied by a guardian/parent.
- Volunteers need to be sensitive to trauma history and have been through a Person Centered Trauma Informed Care training.
- Must follow CDC guidelines to keep the Holocaust survivors and themselves as safe as possible.
- Must provide their own transport to and from the Holocaust survivors home/meeting place.
- Must track all volunteer hours spent with the survivor and share updates with care manager.
- Must keep all information/photographs shared with them confidential.
- Russian and other European language skills preferred
Time/Service Commitment:
Over the next three to four months complete the writing of the story, scanning and labeling of any photographs and formatting for publishing. The amount of time spent with each client will vary according to the survivor. Potentially we would hope the volunteer would be able to schedule an hour to hour and a half weekly/biweekly with the survivor, totaling approximately 12 to 20 visits. Program orientation and training
