Description

Join us at the June Donuts & Discussion to learn about the JFS Migrant Family Shelter on Wednesday, August 7 from 2-3pm to meet the shelter staff, learn about our operations. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCATION IS NOT AT THE SHELTER; SO, THERE WILL NOT BE A TOUR OF THE SHELTER FACILITY TODAY.

The JFS Migrant Family Shelter provides a wide variety of services to asylum-seeking families, including legal counsel, medical screenings, hot meals, travel assistance, and new clothes. We serve approximately 200 migrants every day, most of whom are women with young children. The average length of time spent at the shelter is 12 to 48 hours. After addressing a family’s urgent needs, staff provide transportation assistance to ensure asylum-seekers can safely reunite with loved ones in cities across the U.S. More than 95% of families at the shelter leave San Diego for other destinations as they continue through the legal process.

Latest news: As of May 28th, 2019, we’ve assisted more than 15,000 asylum-seekers and fielded 2,983 calls through our emergency hotline. Earlier this month, Border Patrol announced that migrants who entered along the Texas border would be sent to San Diego for processing. We expect to receive three flights of 135 individuals each week for the foreseeable future, and are working with our partners to meet the needs of these migrant families as they continue their journey.
